Frequently asked questions

How is federal income tax calculated?
The US uses a progressive tax bracket system for 2024. You pay 10% on the first $11,600 of taxable income, 12% on $11,601–$47,150, 22% on $47,151–$100,525, and so on. This calculator applies those brackets after subtracting the standard deduction ($14,600 for single filers, $29,200 for married filing jointly).
What is FICA tax?
FICA stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It consists of Social Security (6.2% on wages up to $168,600) and Medicare (1.45% on all wages). Your employer also pays a matching 6.2% + 1.45% on your behalf — you don't see that, but it's part of your total compensation cost.
Why does pre-tax deductions reduce my tax bill?
Contributions to 401(k), HSA, FSA, and similar accounts come out before taxes are calculated. A $500/month 401(k) contribution doesn't just save $500 — it also reduces your taxable income by $500, meaning you pay less federal and state income tax on top of that.
Are these numbers exact?
This calculator uses 2024 federal tax brackets and standard deductions. State tax rates are simplified averages — actual state tax is marginal like federal. The results are highly accurate for planning purposes, but your actual withholding may vary slightly based on your W-4 elections and additional local taxes.
